Conventionally grown cotton is one of the most pesticide-laden agricultural products on the planet. For example, it takes about a half a kilo of pesticides to grow the cotton used for a 3 towel set (bath, hand and face towel). Cotton uses 25% of the world’s insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides (including insecticides, fungicides, miticides, herbicides, defoliants, and growth regulators).
• In the United States, 25% of all pesticides used are applied to cotton.
• In California, five of the top nine pesticides used on cotton are cancer causing chemicals.
• All of the top nine cotton pesticides in California are labeled by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency as Category I or Category II materials, the most toxic classifications.
• Cotton fibres account for almost 50% of the textile market worldwide.
Cotton as a fabric is cool, comfortable, and easy to care for, but conventionally grown cotton has serious flaws. This is why this company has made a deliberate choice to support organic cotton for a greener planet.
